NO-TILL WORKSHOP HELD IN ORD MARCH 17TH

Dr. Ray Ward discusses the importance of carbon as a soil nutrient

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Ord held a Winter No Till Conference Wednesday March 17, 2010 at the Veterans Club in Ord. Mark Sintek, NRCS Resource Conservationist in Ord, said that around 150 people attended the free workshop and lunch, which was prepared by the Ord High School FFA Chapter.

Sintek said workshop presentations included Dr. Ray Ward of Ward Laboratories in Kearney, who talked about the importance of carbon as a soil nutrient; Dr. Paul Jasa of UNL Extension, who discussed the importance of proper seed placement during planting; Kathy Buttle of Scottsbluff and Dan Gillespie of Battle Creek, both of NRCS, who demonstrated the rainfall simulator. That demonstration allowed attendees to see how no-till practices improve soil structure.

No-till farmer Mark Watson told workshop participants about his water savings using no-till farming and Brian Berns discussed cover crops and forage "cocktails."

Several area businesses had booths set up providing info about their products. The Lower Loup Natural Resources District helped sponsor the event.
