ORD AND AURORA ARE TOP TEAMS AT NORTH CENTRAL ENVIROTHON
Ord and Aurora finished first and second at the North Central Region Envirothon Contest hosted by the Lower Loup Natural Resources District in Columbus on March 15th. With their top
scores, both teams have earned invitations to the Nebraska State Envirothon in May. The North Central Region Envirothon Contest was held in conjunction with the District V and VI Agriculture Education Contests at Central Community College-Platte Campus in Columbus.
High school teams from Ord, Aurora, North Bend, David City, Twin River, Humphrey, Boone Central, Howells-Clarkson, Schuyler Central, Cedar Rapids, Hampton, and Columbus Lakeview took part in the Envirothon. Envirothon is a contest for high school students designed to test their knowledge in forestry, range, soils, wildlife, aquatics, and natural resources policy.
Students must also tackle a current environmental issue. This year that issue is "Salt and Fresh Water Estuaries."
Teams compete in each category of the contest and for the top overall score. This year’s first place team was Ord #1 whose members were Christie Schauer, Johnny Ference, Kris Hornickel, Taylor Hornickel, and Dusty Staab. The second-place Aurora team's members were Ben Vincent, Trevor Sullivan, Andrew McDonald, Greggery Johns, and Derek Floresent. To view the contest results, click here.
Regional Envirothons like the one in Columbus are held around the state and teams that score highest in those contests are invited to the Nebraska State Envirothon to be held Saturday, May 7th at the Trails West YMCA Camp near Scottsbluff. The winner of that contest will go on to represent Nebraska at the national contest, sponsored by Canon, to be held at Mt. Allison University, in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada July 24th through the 29th.
