LLNRD, UNIVERSITY MONITORING GROUNDWATER LEVELS
The Lower Loup NRD is working with the School of Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln to install real-time groundwater level monitoring equipment in dedicated monitoring wells across the District. This equipment will continually track groundwater level trends over the long term while also providing real-time water level data for each well.
The Boone, Wheeler, and Garfield County wells were installed in the early 1980's as part of a research project by the Conservation Survey Division. Water levels in these wells were monitored for three years as part of the study. The wells were never abandoned, but water levels were not read again until several years ago when the LLNRD picked them up.
The wells in northwest Custer and Loup Counties were installed as part of the NRD’s ongoing efforts to better analyze groundwater data for long-term modeling purposes. The School of Natural Resources provided the equipment for gathering real-time data and installed them in the shallow wells at each site. Both sites went online in December of 2009.
The District is currently planning on installing real-time monitoring data loggers in the deep wells at each site to show comparisons of water levels in the different depths of the aquifer.
