LOWER LOUP NRD BOARD APPROVES FINANCIAL PARTICIPATION IN TAYLOR DAM RECONSTRUCTION

The reconstruction of the Taylor Dam, destroyed by last June’s flooding on the North Loup River, will receive funding from the Lower Loup Natural Resources District. The NRD Board of Directors approved financial participation in the project up to 10% of the local share of the replacement costs of an estimated $4 million.

District Engineer Robert Mohler said that the NRD’s financial participation would cover 10 percent of the local share of the project, the actual amount expended by the North Loup Public Power and Irrigation District, owners of the dam, but would not exceed $400,000. He said that any funds received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or any other funding sources would reduce the amount paid by the Natural Resources District.

Mohler said that the NRD’s financial participation would be limited to the dam structure itself, and not to canals or any other structure in the system.

The Lower Loup NRD Board of Directors will consider whether the financial participation will be available over a single year or multiple years during its budget work session later in the year.

The work on the dam replacement began last fall and is expected to be completed before the start of the irrigation system. The dam is located north of Taylor in Loup County.
