Tree Workshops Planned For Lower Loup NRD

June 06, 2019

Two workshops for tree care and landscape professionals, master gardeners, and tree enthusiasts will be held Thursday, June 20, at the Lower Loup NRD offices in Ord:

Morning workshop (9am -12noon):  Tree Pest Detectors

Afternoon workshop (1:30pm – 4:30pm):  Tree and Landscape Management

The Tree Pest Detector workshop will teach participants how to identify and survey for exotic invasive tree pests:  emerald ash borer (attacks ash trees), Asian longhorned beetle (maple, cottonwood, willow, elm, many others), spotted lanternfly (apple, grapes, hops, tree-of-heaven, many others), and thousand cankers disease (black walnut).

Other topics to be covered include tree identification and common pine problems.  Outdoor examination of trees will conclude the agenda as weather and time allow.  In exchange for the training, participants agree to devote at least 3 hours of volunteer time surveying for invasive pests.

The Tree and Landscape Management workshop in the afternoon will focus on creating healthy, resilient landscapes.  Tree care topics will include planting, pruning, root issues, landscape design considerations, and tree maintenance.  There will be lectures, discussion and hands-on exploration of these concepts.

Indoor session topics will include diversity of species, age and genetics; smart planting design; management concepts in pruning and planting.  The outdoor session will include tree assessments, a planting demonstration, and a walking tour/discussion.

Both workshops are free, but registration is required.  Lunch is on your own.  Click here to register at the Nebraska Forest Service web site.  The event flyer can be found here.
