New Management Phase To Be Considered at Hearing

June 14, 2019

A public hearing on a proposed change that would place stricter nitrogen management regulations on a Wheeler County Township will be held by the Lower Loup Natural Resources District on June 18th.  The hearing will be at 1:30 p.m. in the exhibit hall at the Wheeler County Fairgrounds in Bartlett.

The Lower Loup NRD Board of Directors will then consider creating a Phase II Management Sub-Area in Township 23 North, Range 09 West in Wheeler County at its monthly meeting on June 27th.  Groundwater nitrate readings of up to 38.3 parts per million (ppm) have triggered the need for additional management.  The federal limit on nitrates in water is 10 ppm.

Phase II management would include a requirement for flow meters on irrigation wells, certification classes for all nitrogen applicators, no fall or winter fertilizer applications on sandy soils, annual soil and water samples, and annual reporting.
